Yuengling outsold every other craft brewing company in America last year, taking the 2013 sales crown from Sam Adams. Curiously Yuengling didn’t even make it on 2013’s list. So what happened?

The Brewers Association, which determines the rankings, relaxed its rules about the definition of “craft” in 2014. Unlike in previous years, the association decided to allow craft brewers to incorporate corn, rice and syrups as flavor-enhancers in their recipes. With the rule change Yuengling finally qualified to compete.
