One of the great joys of watching Mike Judge’s HBO series Silicon Valley is trying to figure out when and how the show will blow itself up and reformat its premise yet again. Every single time Richard (Thomas Middleditch) and his friends seem to finally have that tech-startup dream money within reach, they crumble, by way stupidity, careless amateurism, glorious self-sabotage or a smattering of all three. The result is a show that’s not just amusing but wildly unpredictable. If the show were a drama, its subgenre might just be thriller.
As the show’s fourth season kicks off, Richard has decided to quit the company he founded, which is wise because his friends were apparently getting ready to throw him out anyway. Always a bundle of nervous energy, Richard is determined to go bigger, taking his initial revolutionary compression software and channeling it into the building of the “new internet,” whatever that means. Meanwhile, the other big tech McGuffin of the season seems to be VR. Also, Haley Joel Osment is now here for some reason.
Of course, the new trailer is also packed with all of thse wonderful Silicon Valley moments in which the show’s leads, all tech geniuses in one way or another, prove that they’re still idiots. You’ve got Richard putting his foot straight through a door, Dinesh (Kumail Nanjiani) and Gilfoyle (Martin Starr) in matching silk jammies, Jared (Zach Woods) basically admitting that the team is a bunch of criminals now and Erlich (T.J Miller), ever the clumsy orator, tryng to explain mansplaining to women. Never change, Pied Piper crew.
Silicon Valley returns April 23 on HBO.
