If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to live in a post-apocalyptic, zombie-infested wasteland, AMC might be able to help you out. The network has partnered with Finnish Studio Next Games on The Walking Dead: Our World, an upcoming location-based augmented reality mobile game that will aim to put players in the world of its hit TV show by “by blending digital objects, such as characters and other game elements, with the players’ own environment,” the companies said in a joint announcement. Think Pokémon Go with a lot more entrails.
Of course, a TWD game wouldn’t be complete without appearances from all your favorite zombie-slayers. Rick, Daryl and Michonne will use their considerable skills and experience to help players navigate their way through the zombie-apocalypse with the help of some staple weapons from the show, including grenades, guns and of course, Michonne’s patented sword.
“The fans love how the show encourages you to ask, ‘What would I do in a zombie apocalypse?’, and in this game we aim to let players explore this hypothetical in a way they’ve never experienced before,” Next CEO Teemu Huuhtanen said in a statement. “AR enables players to live through the fight for survival in a whole new way in their familiar surroundings.”
When Pokémon Go exploded onto the scene last year, turning everyone you knew into well, zombies, it signaled the arrival of what many observers predicted would be an AR revolution. But as the frenzy surrounding that game faded, the AR movement stalled, at least as far as mobile platforms are concerned. But with The Walking Dead’s steadfast popularity coupled with the presumed satisfaction of bashing a Walker’s brains in on your way to work, expect The Walking Dead: Our World to become a full-blown phenomenon when it’s launched on iOS and Android in the near future.
