Hard Science

We Made a Ton of Cool Sex Discoveries This Year

In a year packed with landmark scientific discoveries, those made in the field of sex were some of the biggest. All year long, Hard Science brought you the data that matters. For instance, did you know women can tell when other women are ovulating? They can sense it, even though they don’t know they can sense it. So, that’s cool—and also explains why a woman may sometimes act wildly jealous without obvious reason. Check the rest of Justin Lehmiller’s best-of-the-year sex-science news here.

Does Your Number of Past Sexual Partners Make You Unattractive?

According to a study from the Journal of Sex Research, the number of people you have slept with could make you more or less attractive to new partners. This is equally true for men or women. While our culture may slut-shame and stud-praise, individuals don’t. The study found that anyone with a higher-than-average number of sexual partners was seen as less attractive. So, how many partners is considered too many? This article has a breakdown of the data.

This Week in WTF?!

Was the Assassin of Russia’s Ambassador to Turkey Having Sex With a Western Spy?

The tags from the strangest sex news stories of the week includes Turkey, tongues and breasts, naturally.

Let’s start with the tongues. The hardest part of a long-distance relationship is maintaining that sense of intimacy. These days you can Skype and watch movies together over FaceTime, but most of the time you just want to kiss the one you love. Well, the tech world is here to help. Not one, but two new devices will soon allow you to make-out with your long-distance lover. The first, Teletongue, looks like two lollipops connected by the internet. You put one in your mouth, your partner puts the other in their mouth and your kiss is converted into pleasant stimulations from the lollipop.

If that sounds ridiculous, just wait until you hear the name of the rival tele-kissing device. The brains at sex-toymaker Lovotics named their toy Kissenger. Because nothing says “long-distance intimacy” quite like making a pun out of the name of the architect of Southeast Asian carpet-bombing campaigns and bloody South American coups. To be fair, Henry Kissinger did give the world that famous aphorism about sex: “Power is the ultimate aphrodisiac.”

Speaking of sex and power, it was reported this week that Mevlut Mert Altintas, the assassin of Andrey Karlov, Russian ambassador to Turkey, may have been in contact with and handled by a female Western intelligence operative. Like, naked-in-a-hotel-room-in-the-middle-of-the-day close. That’s the rumor that Turkish paper Hurriyet Today published, claiming that a Russian woman who admitted she had a relationship with Altintas may be a secret “Western intelligence plant” or a terrorist operative working with FETO, a rebel group that opposes Turkish President Tayyip Recep Erdogan. The paper also reports the woman is now being questioned by Vladimir Putin’s security services. And just like Paulie from The Godfather, we may never see her again.

We thought we should end the year on a good note, so here you go: A new study on breast shapes determined which curvatures the majority of men prefer. The respondents were from four countries: Brazil, Cameroon, the Czech Republic and Namibia. Can you guess which shape won?
