Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks are cinema geniuses apart, but put them together and they can do extraordinary things. Bridge of Spies is their first collaboration since The Terminal in 2004 (and Spielberg’s first film since Lincoln three years ago), and to make this one extra special they brought fellow geniuses Joel and Ethan Coen along to co-write the screenplay.

The film tells the true story of James B. Donovan (Hanks), a lawyer recruited by the U.S. government to negotiate the release of a U-2 spy plane pilot (Austin Stowell) in exchange for a Russian spy (the great Mark Rylance) in American custody. The first trailer just hit, and it’s packed with Cold War intrigue, from secret messages to executions at the Berlin Wall. Spielberg’s already proven he can do spy films right with stuff like Munich, and it feels great to know we finally get to see him work his magic again this year.

Bridge of Spies arrives October 16.
