Good news everybody, Tom Hardy is going to play Venom in a standalone movie directed by Ruben Fleischer, of Zombieland fame, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The movie will be an early tentpole for the Sony wing of the Marvel Comics Universe.
The bad news is, Venom might not be able to carry a movie on his own. Eddie Brock is a fascinating character, one whose selfishness perfectly counters Peter Parker’s altruism. Their backstories are enmeshed: Originally, Spidey donned the Venom suit before he realized it was an alien that was controlling him. He takes off the suit, which bonds with Eddie Brock and quickly takes control. Eddie’s life is ruined; he divorces and loses his relationship with his father. This is why the foil of Peter Parker is so important; both of the characters’ complexity mutually benefit the other.
Though the movie has been rumored for nigh on four years, the Reporter reports that “the studio is not wasting time as the movie is set to open Oct. 5, 2018.”
Although Hardy is a great actor and a satisfying choice, the fears of failure with this are high. We’re not sure if Venom is enough of a character to carry his own movie and we’re not sure if this is a desperate bid for Sony to retain rights before they revert to Marvel. The only thing we’re really excited for is the potential for another Tom Hardy accent special. We hope it’s less understandable than his mealymouthed Bain.
Hardy does look pretty good in a Venom shirt though.
