Twitter unveiled today that it is doing away with the default profile image of an egg. No longer will you be harangued with bigoted opinions from an embryonic chicken icon! Now the bigoted idiots of the world will be forced to go about being a complete disappointment to their parents (a.k.a. trolling) with a vague grey-humanoid shape. Twitter stated on its website that the site sought to make the profile image less interesting, and more psychologically prone to induce a desire to change it.
The remarkably bland user image beat out numerous other remarkably bland user images, according to their official announcement. They also recognize that the image was starting to have an association with harassing accounts.
“We’ve noticed patterns of behavior with accounts that are created only to harass others – often they don’t take the time to personalize their accounts. This has created an association between the default egg profile photo and negative behavior, which isn’t fair to people who are still new to Twitter and haven’t yet personalized their profile photo.”
This isn’t Twitter’s first clap-back against troll accounts. Early in March, Twitter announced that it was implementing tools to combat the foulmouthed egg accounts. Although some think the measures are insufficient, Twitter’s battle with trolls is one of their biggest concerns as a company. If they can not solve this problem, they look at the difficulty of remaining viable as a business.
Banning Milo Yiannopoulos was a good move, though.
