The Urbanworld film festival begins in New York City today featuring full-length films, documentaries, and shorts made by diverse filmmakers from all over the world. The opening night offering is the pop-culture-centric romance Beyond the Lights, written and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball) and starring Nate Parker (Arbitrage), Minnie Driver, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw.

British beauty Mbatha-Raw, who starred in Larry Crowne with Tom Hanks and J.J. Abrams’ short-lived action series Undercovers, has become something of a starlet on the rise since last year’s Belle slow-burned its way to box office success.
