Though they’ve enjoyed a film Renaissance under the Disney banner over the last few years, Jim Henson’s Muppets haven’t really had a major presence on TV since 1998, when Muppets Tonight went off the air. ABC is hoping to change that this fall with The Muppets, a new series that will take a docudrama approach to the lives of the titular puppets.
The initial presentation that transformed the series from an idea to a real show was screened for fans at Comic-Con, and it was so well-received that ABC decided to release it to everyone. It imagines a Muppet world in which Miss Piggy has to be talked into returning to the cast, Fozzie has a girlfriend, and Kermit is – as always – trying to keep the group together. With a little luck, this could mark the next great resurgence of The Muppets.
