The U.S. Navy’s new “Hyper Velocity Projectile,” along with the new electromagnetic Railgun that fires it, will begin testing aboard the USS Millinocket in 2016. But thanks to the power of YouTube, you don’t have to wait to see the ridiculous weapon in action.
So, what’s so special about this projectile? For starters, it doesn’t use any explosive propellant, which means it’s “basically a flying hypersonic spike.” Second, it’s extremely fast, reaching speeds of 5,600 MPH. It also has a range of over 100 miles, and can be guided in-flight, provided it is connected to a network.
The projectile was created as ammunition for a electromagnetic Railgun, and will also be used by some existing deck guns. But regardless of what type of gun is firing it, you don’t want to be around when it lands.
