After wading through two quarters of a messy Giants vs. Eagles matchup, ESPN finally delivered on its promise and gave us the final trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens Monday night. Sadly, it still doesn’t tell us what exactly the movie’s about, but it does paint a compelling picture of a world beyond Return of the Jedi, a world where the good guys think of the Jedi as a myth and the bad guys worship Darth Vader like a martyr. The whole thing is held together by Harrison Ford’s gruff insistence that “It’s true. All of it,” and in that we get to see echoes of the original fandom telling the Younglings that, yes, once upon a time it really was this magical. It’s deliberately mysterious, but for me it calls to mind my own father telling me about how great Star Wars was when he saw it in ‘77. That’d be enough to get me hooked if I wasn’t already.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens December 18.
