Stateside, most McDonald’s are pretty uninspired, cookie cutter buildings tucked into strip malls or perched off of freeway offramps. Yet in Europe, from Porto to Rome McD’s has locations you’d actually want to sit in. But the greatest one we’ve seen to date has just opened in Rotterdam. It’s so nice, we’d maybe even endure a McDonald’s burger.
The new building vastly improves upon the McDonald’s that formerly took up the same piece of real estate, which residents had regarded as the ugliest building in town. The residents weren’t wrong. But this new fast food joint, designed by Mei Architects, is a gleaming cube of glass and gold anodized aluminum that’s crisp, modern and oh so Euro. It’s a beautiful space, inside and out, but we’ll be interested to see how long those leather couches stay in such pristine shape.
