**Guardians of the Galaxy’s the big summer hit ** The big box office news from the weekend is that, even though revenues are down 15 percent from last summer, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is the big winner this season, raking in over $550 million dollars worldwide in the five weeks since its premiere. The cosmic romp’s Labor Day weekend haul was an impressive $22 million, easily beating As Above, So Below and The November Man, the two wide-release debuts.

*Video gamers call for an end to “harassing speech” * Over the weekend, 600 members of the video gaming community “signed” their names to an Open Letter calling for an end to “threats of violence or harm in comments on Steam, YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, Facebook or Reddit.” The sentiment, while a little vague, is damn near a revolutionary idea in the gaming world where shit-talking is de rigueur on the virtual battlefield and beyond.

*Nick Cannon is for the children * Wild ’N Out’s own Nick Cannon is set to release a book of stories for kids titled Neon Aliens Ate My Homework and Other Poems through Scholastic. The comedian, who has twins of his own with Mariah Carey, says the junior material will come with a hip-hop twist — whatever that means.

*New music from Prince * His Purple Majesty has released two new songs from two separated projects. “U Know” is a glitchy, slow groove from his upcoming solo album, Art Official Age. “Whitecaps” is a way more traditional mid-tempo ballad from his new band, Prince and 3rdEyeGirl. For my money, the former is the heater.
