On the HBO series Westworld, actress Thandie Newton plays Maeve, a bordello madam who starts to question reality and take control of her own existence. In various scenes, her character wears either elaborate low-cut dresses appropriate for an Old West saloon, or goes completely nude in a laboratory setting.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, she revealed that she preferred filming in the nude. “I found myself more empowered naked than I did with the saloon outfit on. I was more comfortable naked because the costume was the most potent objectification of a woman, with the boobs pushed right up, the tiny waist. It’s an invitation for sex.” She says that when she was dressed as a madam, she attracted lewd attention on set, but she was treated much more respectfully when she was working naked.

In a separate interview with BBC’s Andrew Marr, Newton talked about how much she loved playing Maeve. “It was a delicious part to play. I savored every word, particularly one speech about, ‘At first I thought you were gods, but then I realized that you’re men, and I know men. You think I’m afraid of death? I’ve died a thousand times. I’m great at it. How many times have you died?’” Watch her appearance on The Andrew Marr Show here:

Newton will return to Westworld for its second season in 2018. In the meantime, she’ll star in the fourth season of the BBC police drama Line of Duty as a police detective under investigation for corruption. She is also expected to appear in the still-untitled 2018 Star Wars anthology film about Han Solo.
