Fishnets, a long-time hosiery favorite of fearless females, are a fashion staple almost always guaranteed to receive a grand-scale double take. Fishnets mold to the body and keep eyes glued. Ripped, slightly torn, or perfectly intact, an element of edge is instantly added. Lately, fishnets have made a resurgence: being worn in a multitude of unexpected ways, taking an item once reserved for shock value and moving it to must have status while maintaining every ounce of sex appeal.
Considering fishnets have long been favored by mavericks, such as burlesque dancers or pin-ups, there have always been subliminal undertones to wearing the mesh. No longer limited to the punk or goth subcultures of which the garment is often attributed, fishnets have made their way onto and off of the runway and into the mainstream. Worn in many forms, the mesh is usually featured as tights, thigh-high stockings, socks, bodysuits, shirts, and even gloves, allowing it to be styled creatively.
Recently, some of our favorite starlets have been photographed sporting the risqué legwear aplenty, integrating the accessory to each their own. As perfectly referenced by Nicola Peltz, fishnet, and the intent behind it, is open to interpretation: “I’m not a concept, I’m an enigma.”
A strong proponent of this look is the renegade actress Kristen Stewart, often seen sporting fishnets. This past summer, she was spotted multiple times wearing fishnets in unexpected ways, such when she was seen leaving New York’s The Bowery Hotel wearing fishnet socks with denim shorts, t-shirt, and blazer.
Many fashion plates are pairing classic sneakers with fishnets. Back in October, Kendall Jenner featured a pair of fishnet socks with casual Vans “Old Skool” sneakers and shredded cropped jeans.
Sarah Snyder cops the same sneakers, exposing fishnets under her lace-up black jeans.
Bella Thorne layers socks over her fishnets, paired with a pair of black suede Adidas Campus sneakers.
It is also appropriate that many are just offering a tease by styling the legwear in “made you look” fashion, visible above the waistband of jeans or pants. Kim Kardashian loudly displayed this trend a few months back, wearing Wolford oversize fishnets with unbuttoned denim jeans and nothing else.
Hailey Baldwin pairs her fishnets more casually, with jeans and a vintage New Kids on the Block cropped t-shirt.
Looking closely at Paris Jackson’s Instagram, she styles black fishnets under jeans, complimenting a “Torch Your Bra” slogan t-shirt.
Sarah Snyder was an early trailblazer, nearly a year ago, wearing bright red fishnets under buttoned jeans.
Former Playboy cover girl Sky Ferreira has also layered black jeans over classic fishnets
Still, many are styling the legwear in classic fashion. Imagine the lucky Lyft driver with passenger Kendall Jenner, wearing strappy stilettos and black fishnet thigh-highs, perched leisurely in the backseat this past Halloween weekend
Kylie Jenner leaves her styling to the imagination, showcasing little more than a hot pair of fishnets studded with rhinestones.

Of course, the mesh continues to maintain a presence on stage. Consider Beyoncé, who regularly incorporates the tights into her performance ensembles.
Madonna, perhaps one of the foremost proponents, helping bring fishnets to the masses since the 1980s, still frequently rocks the garment, such as in this recent Steven Klein video:
While some of the more extreme looks may be best reserved for stage shows, we’re in support of women embracing this teasing accessorty this season.
