What’s Coming and Going from Netflix in August

What’s Coming and Going from Netflix in August: Miramax

Miramax

Drop everything: Addams Family Values is leaving Netflix in August, meaning you have only a few more days to enjoy the 1990s updating of Charles Addams’ creepy and kooky post-nuclear unit. Perhaps more importantly, Bowfinger is also disappearing, and that really is worth checking out if you haven’t watched it recently, with Eddie Murphy on top form.

Luckily, there’s all manner of good stuff arriving to take the place of the dearly departing, including last year’s Louis C.K. stand-up special, Sleepy Hollow (The movie from the ‘90s, not the TV show) and the seventeenth season of Law & Order: SVU. Of course, if you’re looking to check out just five movies over the next four weeks, may we humbly suggest these five…?

13 CAMERAS
A marriage in trouble is a sad, relatable thing, but when it’s a marriage in trouble from a voyeur who is spying on the unhappy couple via a series of hidden cameras in their home, suddenly things go from everyday tragedy to the stuff of horror movies. Thank writer/director Victor Zarcoff for the paranoid nightmares you’re going to have after this one.

MAZ JOBRANI: I’M NOT A TERRORIST, BUT I’VE PLAYED ONE ON TV
Iranian-American stand-up comedian Jobrani talks about race in contemporary America in this special, as well as those stand-by stand-up topics: politics and family. If nothing else, the title gives you a good idea of what to expect.

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
The Coen brothers take on the Western — with, of course, a twist — in this stunning cat-and-mouse thriller adapted from the Cormac McCarthy novel. Eet in the Texas of the 1980s, Josh Brolin and Tommy Lee Jones find themselves try to outwit each other, while Javier Bardem wanders around in the background as a much more dangerous presence.

THE CONFIRMATION
On the face of it, it’s hard to know what to make of this comedy/drama in which Clive Owen plays a carpenter whose quiet weekend with his son is interrupted by the quasi-adventure of trying to find out who’s stolen his tools. (That’s not a euphemism, although it may be a metaphor.) At times wise, funny and pious, it ends up being a charming, if flawed, story about good people trying to do good, despite themselves.

THE GET DOWN: PART 1
The new series by Moulin Rogue’s Baz Luhrman goes from Parisian nightlife of a long-gone golden age to the New York streets of the 1970s, when soul, disco and rap were changing lives without even trying hard. Expect over-the-top musical sequences and moments that’ll make you tear up despite yourself, based on past experience.
