What’s Coming and Going on Netflix in July

What’s Coming and Going on Netflix in July: 20th Century Fox

20th Century Fox

Hopefully you’ve been marathoning the various Star Trek movies as much as possible this year, because they’re just some of the features disappearing from Netflix’s steaming service in July—also going, to the chagrin of sci-fi fans, is Joss Whedon’s Serenity. On the plus side, there’s a heap of classic material being added in its place, including the new season of BoJack Horseman and the first two Beverly Hills Cop movies (which is to say, the good ones). Oh, and these five picks, of course…

BATMAN: THE MOVIE (1966)
Sure, there are those who argue whether Christian Bale or Michael Keaton was the best cinematic Batman, but they’re wrong—as he demonstrates in this slice of pitch-perfect kitsch, Adam West embodies everything that’s good about DC’s superhero, literally. Not for him, the tortured angst and twisted morality of post-modern takes on the 75+ year-old superhero. Nope, this is classic, kid-friendly ridiculousness, with every over-the-top event made infinitely more palatable by performances from the likes of Lee Meriwether, Burgess Meridith and Frank Gorshin, who remains to this day the perfect Riddler.

THE BIG SHORT (2015)
As a post-Brexit world teeters on the brink of economic instability, it’s probably a great time to revisit Adam McKay’s investigation into the financial crisis of 2007-2008, with Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling et al trying to beat the system by… well, playing the system in a way that we probably shouldn’t find quite so charming. Thankfully Margot Robbie is around to explain things in a way that we’ll definitely pay attention to.

GHOSTHEADS (2016)
Ahead of next month’s Ghostbusters reboot, take the chance to learn about the world of fandom surrounding the original movies—sure, you probably liked the first one a lot and remember the second as being a bit ropey (It is), but it turns out there’s an entire community of people who like to cosplay their favorite spook catchers and take their love into society at large. And you thought it was only Star Wars fans who got into that kind of thing…

THE INVITATION (2015)
How to ensure that you’ll never want to talk to old friends and/or attend a dinner party ever again, step 1 (of 1): watch Karyn Kusama’s horror movie about Will (Logan Marshall-Green, AKA “That guy you always think is Tom Hardy, but it’s not”) and his girlfriend attending a dinner party thrown by his ex-wife that ends up going horribly wrong. Suffice to say, not everyone gets to leave the party. Watch what you’re eating next time you have dinner with friends, that’s all I’m saying.

LETHAL WEAPON (1987)
There are a lot of great old movies coming onto the service in July, including the entire Back to the Future series and also the entire Lethal Weapon series—for fans of 1980s rom-coms, you can also check out Working Girl to revisit Melanie Griffith’s head for business and bod for sin. While not every movie in the series holds up to history, there remains something wonderfully fun about the original Lethal Weapon, thanks in large part to Shane Black’s great screenplay. Think of it as a prequel—or, considering the eras both movies take place in, a sequel—to The Nice Guys.
