What’s Coming and Going on Netflix in October

What’s Coming and Going on Netflix in October: Netflix

Netflix

Judging by the selections leaving Netflix in October, some kind of contract between NBC Universal and the streaming company has come to an end, resulting in the loss of both Back to the Future and all eight seasons of Psych alike. But don’t worry—the streaming service has a genuinely impressive collection of brand new material lined up, including new documentaries from Ava DuVernay and Werner Herzog, and the first new Black Mirror in a couple of years.

13TH
Selma director Ava DuVernay looks at the modern American justice system in this new documentary, exploring the three-strikes rule, private prisons and connections between contemporary “justice” and old-school slavery. Expect few punches pulled in this important, potentially uncomfortable, but utterly necessary piece of work.

BEING GEORGE CLOONEY
Turns out, there’s more than one George Clooney… at least as far as his voice goes, at least. (The smirk, it turns out, really is unique. Dammit.) This wonderful documentary takes a look at the various actors who have the job of dubbing Clooney in foreign language releases of his movies, trying to find that quintessential Clooney-ness that brings them all together.

BLACK MIRROR: SEASON 3 (PART 1)
As if to underscore that we all live in a terrifying technological hells cape, Charlie Brooker’s contemporary dystopian Twilight Zone returns for the first part of its all-new, all-Netflix season, which will feature episodes written by Rashida Jones and 10 Cloverfield Lane’s Dan Trachtenberg, starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Kelly Macdonald and Halt and Catch Fire’s Mackenzie Davis. Living in fear has never seemed so attractive.

INTO THE INFERNO
When you think of nature documentaries, maybe you don’t think about Werner Herzog—a man once called “the most important film director alive” by François Truffaut, and named as one of the most influential people alive by Time. And yet, here he’s been at it since the ‘60s. In this latest effort, he’s making a documentary about volcanoes. All snark aside, it’ll be beautiful.

MASCOTS
If there’s any justice, each and every new Christopher Guest movie would be treated as an event, and lo and behold, here’s one—a Netflix exclusive, no less—about the apparently competitive world of sports mascots. Expect back-biting, interpersonal rivalry and an eye on the whole world that’s trying to stop from blinking too much because it’s so frustrated by the inanity.
