Fetish model Kelly Lee Dekay is really into “waist training,” a bizarre method of figure control that uses steel-boned, tight-laced corsets to actively shrink a person’s waist circumference.
Since she began waist training seven years ago, The 27-year-old from New York has shrunk her waist to a mere 16 inches, according to the Daily Mail.
Why would anyone want to do such a thing, you ask?
Well, in short, Dekay wants to look like her favorite graphic novel and cartoon characters, like Storm from “X-Men” and Jessica Rabbit—two fictional females who have a generally unrealistic hourglass figure.
“Growing up I just love the exaggeration of styles and the beautiful costumes that comic book characters would wear and that led to the aesthetic that led to tight-lacing,” Dekay says.
Living most of your life with a glorified steel cage crushing your ribs doesn’t come without its challenges, of course. Dekay says she has trouble going up the stairs and can’t carry too many heavy things at once, and she has to take it off when she hits the gym because she pumps mad iron.
“If I do want to do something extreme, I don’t limit myself,” she says. “If I have to be out of my corset, then I’m out of it.”
As you may have imagined, Dekay gets a lot of shit—especially via online commenters—about her lifestyle choice. She recently addressed the negative attention on her Facebook page:
