Stop the presses! Men find women in their early 20s to be the most attractive!
This (less than) shocking claim comes from Christian Rudder’s new book, Dataclysm, which compiles social media stats to give us a new perspective about our awful, awful world.
According to stats from OK Cupid, men, regardless of their age, find women between the ages of 20 and 23 to be the most attractive. Again, I can’t believe some people find this surprising. A quick visit to any porn site (or a glance through almost any Playboy Magazine published in the past 62 years) would seem to suggest the same thing.
Yes, there’s the phenomena of “MILF” and “stepmom” porn. But even the oldest actresses in those ridiculous videos are in their late 30s or very early 40s, and they tend to look much younger (from what I’ve been told).
Of course, some argue that men prefer younger women because social factors such as porn have conditioned them to do so. Perhaps there’s some truth to that. Or perhaps it has something to do with the fact that younger people tend to be more in shape and tend to have fewer wrinkles/hemorrhoids. But hey, I guess we’ll never know.
However, what is surprising is the fact that men in their mid-30s (and older) actually think they should attempt to pursue women in their early 20s. It’s one thing to say you find younger women to be the most attractive. It’s another to actually attempt to engage in a relationship. But according to the data, lots of older OK Cupid users are doing just that. And in most cases, I certainly can’t fault women who find that to be disturbing. What the hell is a 45-year-old man going to talk about with a 22-year-old woman? She’s not going to get your Seinfeld and Big Lebowski references! And don’t even think about quoting David Wooderson from Dazed and Confused, even as a joke. Not only will it be super creepy, but it will also probably go right over her head.
What’s even more surprising is that older women do not find younger men to be the most attractive. According to the data, a woman’s preference toward men changes over the years and seems to stay in close proximity to her own age.
While I don’t question the data, I still have a hard time believing 50-year-old women find your average 46-year-old man more attractive than a 20-something (or even a 30-something) male. Perhaps women on OK Cupid are simply being more realistic than their male counterparts, putting more of an emphasis on compatibility rather than physical features. If not, perhaps it’s women who have been conditioned by society to find older men more attractive. Sure, celebrities like Christian Bale and Jude Law look great. But if you want to see a real 40-something guy, head over to Golden Corral. It ain’t pretty.
