Experts: Zika Virus Can Spread By Way of Oral Sex:

While the Zika virus has seemed limited to South America to the passing newsreader, that is not at all the case. Zika has traveled well beyond the continent’s borders, making its way into Central America, the Caribbean, and the United States. Now comes the news that, according to experts in a New England Journal of Medicine op-ed, Zika can be passed on through oral sex. In fact, the U.S. already has had about a dozen cases of sexually transmitted Zika since last year’s initial outbreak.

The problem here, in its immediate apparency, is that condoms, a go-to for vaginal and anal sex, don’t often make their way into an oral sex scenario. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention wants that to change, recommending men traveling to and through any Zika-hit country use condoms in every instance of intimacy.

The theory of sex working as a vessel for the flavivirus has been rolling around for years, but gotten stronger and more specific in research with the recent epidemic. Ten Zika-stricken countries have mosquito populations that aren’t carrying the disease, leading researchers to evaluating the carnal transport.

But it’s not just sex, by the way.

NEJM: We cannot rule out the possibility that transmission occurred not through semen but through other biologic fluids, such as pre-ejaculate secretions or saliva exchanged through deep kissing.

Safe sex should be a standard, but this is a very good reminder to always be protective of and with our partners.
