Playboy.com: Let's begin with Strays. What was making this one like?

Perry Farrell: I would say it was more organized and methodically produced, but at the same time, it was a joy to create because of how we made it. It's like filmmaking was in the old days when you used an eight-millimeter, and now you have all these amazing things at your disposal when you're making a film. It was the same thing making this record: The technology has changed, and the ways and methods in which we can make a record now are exhilarating.

PB: Does Jane's Addiction feel like a real band again? Are you guys working together as a unit the way you did in the old days?

PF: It feels more like a band than it ever has. We didn't know each other back in the day as people. We were very segregated, and basically we just came together for the stage. When we got off the stage we went our separate ways. Now, everyone calls in the morning before rehearsals; we're seeing each other every day, and we look forward to getting together. We came to understand by missing each other how important we were as a band, starting with just the sound. We strayed off and kind of played in different bands, but we never reached the heights that Jane's did musically.

It's a matter of chemistry, and we really came to appreciate each other as musicians. We then made it our business to know each other as people. So we remember each other's birthdays, and we're there for each other for special occasions, and other things, too, in the way of support. Because this industry has gotten to be a very, very difficult place. You have to work very hard in this business to carve out any kind of room for yourself, and you need each other for moral support. There's a lot more to decide on; it's not simply a matter of, "Do you like that song? Let's go!" It's, "Do you like that song? Do you like that shirt? Do you like that picture? Do you like that DVD? Do you like that video? Do you like that website?"

There are so many things you have to be on top of that if you don't have a strong team, you'll never make it. I've heard of bands today that have hassled with each other, and they're never the same. They never recover. You need each other as teammates.

PB: You seem to think there are things that you can do with this band that you can't do on your own or with another group, like Porno for Pyros. What is so special about Jane's Addiction?
