This value-priced anthology of 1980s/1990s arcade hits teaches a valuable lesson. No matter how archaic yesterday's digital diversions may look in the era of HD graphics and massively multiplayer online connectivity, a little first-rate game-play still goes a long way.
Cramming 20 old-school gems onto a single disc, this handy collector's set delivers straightforward, instantly gratifying action. Progressive-scan video support subtly enhances graphical quality, but it's the action that counts. Airplane-based shoot-'em-up legend 1941 and seminal sci-fi hack-and-slash Strider stand out among the crowd. You're also provided a spate of enjoyable, side-scrolling beat 'em ups such as Captain Commando and Knights of the Round. Sure, there's some padding, such as Block Block and Varth, as well as an edition of Street Fighter II that pales before its broadband support-sporting, Xbox Live-ready cousin. Still, you'll get a lot of fun out of the remixed music, vintage artwork, historical software bios and tips/cheats earned by meeting set goals or hitting specific high score targets.
A general respect for the source material shines throughout, while the budget-friendly asking fee won't dent your wallet. Nevertheless, we'd have liked to have seen some actual fresh material -- new levels or some feature enhancements -- not to mention by-now-standard upgrades such as online multiplayer support. But if you're a collector or simply a passing enthusiast, this collection is a great deal for just a couple pocketfuls of quarters.
