Chicago 10 MOVIE REVIEW:
![]() Archival footage of Jerry Rubin (left); a sketch rendition of Abbie Hoffman (right) Watching Chicago 10 is such a powerful, provocative and gripping experience, no wonder this terrifically innovative documentary from writer-director-producer Brett Morgen (The Kid Stays in the Picture) has reawakened interest in the bloody clash between anti-Vietnam War protestors and the out-of-control Chicago Police Department during the 1968 Democratic Convention, widely televised events that polarized a nation and led to the U.S. government conducting a bizarre conspiracy trial involving such counterculture icons as Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Black Panther Party co-chair Bobby Seale and famed progressive attorney William Kunstler. Morgen's movie tackles the sprawling subject with such emotional directness and assurance that Steven Spielberg and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin -- who are planning a feature film on the same subject and have cast Sacha Baron Cohen as Hoffman -- have their work cut out for them. Chicago 10, which debuted at last year's Sundance Film Festival, happily dispenses with documentary clichés like expository narration, self-congratulatory talking heads and hot button vintage music. ![]() Animation from the courtroom by Stephen Rebello credits: top left: Courtesy of Roadside Attractions; top right and bottom: C7 Films Inc. |
