White Williams
Audio Clip: "New Violence" Like many an electro-pop maven before him, Joe Williams has a thing for 1980s kitsch, itself indebted to 1970s glam. But Williams has something a lot of his peers lack, and that's songs. While not every track on Smoke is up to the same standards, the stand-outs are strong enough to carry the stragglers. Tracks in the former category include the slinky "Headlights," Marc Bolan-on-cough syrup chug of "In the Club" and the Gary Newman-y "New Violence." In the latter category is a conspicuously redundant cover of "I Want Candy," whose relative lameness seems to be Williams's way of saying he doesn't care a lick what you think, because he knows he has the moves that make you groove. -- Joshua Klein |
