PB: Was it tough supporting yourself?
DD: I made some money doing music, and I was a waitress. But I also did a Virgin Megastore commercial and some video stuff. I even scouted for a record label.
PB: With your good looks, we're surprised you never modeled.
DD: I hate having my picture taken and now it's all about photo shoots, which is such a drag. I hate having all that makeup on my face. And I've always been a daydreamer so it never occurred to me, "Why don't you go model?" Then I'd have to stop eating. Plus, when I was younger, I was too punk-rocker looking. People would go, "God, you have such a pretty face, but that hair?" I was like Wednesday Addams thinking blonde, blue-eyed girls were yucky, and I always like the dark-haired electric-looking women. Now I'm into being natural.
PB: You sure have blossomed.
DD: My friends used to tell me I had a lot of sex appeal and I used to dress down. A lot of people in LA have that Madonna/whore complex, but I just wasn't into guys checking me out when I'd walk by. I was always attracted to men, but like I said, I was a daydreamer -- a weirdo. In fact, I got voted weirdest in high school.
PB: Have you been flaunting that sex appeal onstage?
DD: Yeah. I feel like I'm the sexiest girl singer out there without being a tramp. I'm not in your face. I'm more like a Brigitte Bardot Sixties sexpot. It's not like Britney Spears who does that, uh-uh-uh-uh [simulating dry humping noise].
PB: Then you're not a fan of the new pop singer girls?
DD: It's OK. It's just too stiff for me. I like sultry.
PB: What's most seductive about you?
DD: If I'm onstage, it's the way I let the music move through me. The way I feel it and present it. Everyone says I have bedroom eyes.
PB: Speaking of the bedroom, do you think a lot of people are doing the horizontal mambo to your music?
DD: Yeah. My friends all say they've done it to my album and they say it's a little weird hearing my voice while having sex. I actually arranged the album that way. Like Black Transmission is kind of revved up and then Love Met the Devil is like when you're slipping it in there. And then the rest is just kind of smooth. So, yeah, I thought about how the album would go when making love.
