About Beyoncé

Singer, actress, entrepreneur and sexy celebrity diva, Beyoncé Giselle Knowles was born in Houston, Texas. She began performing in elementary school and by high school was in a girl group called Gyrls Tyme. The group included future Destiny’s Child members Kelly Rowland, LeToya Luckett, and LaTavia Roberson.

In 1996, Beyoncé’s father Matthew gave up his successful sales job to manage the group full time. After a few lineup changes, Matthew negotiated a deal for the girls with Columbia Records. The group’s name was changed to Destiny’s Child, and its first album with the single “No, No, No” was released in 1998.

A year later, Destiny’s Child’s second album, “The Writing’s on the Wall,” debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard charts. The group gained major attention with singles such as “Say My Name” and “Jumpin’, Jumpin’,” and the album went on to sell more than 8 million copies.

Beyoncé continued to enjoy success with Destiny’s Child, winning a Grammy and contributing “Independent Women Part I” to the Charlie’s Angels movie soundtrack. But she also began to explore her own career.

Beyoncé made her movie debut as Foxxy Cleopatra in the Austin Power’s movie Goldmember in 2002 and released her first solo album, “Dangerously in Love,” in 2003. The album was a smash hit, and the single “Crazy in Love” spent eight weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. Beyoncé took home five Grammys for her work in 2004. “This is unbelievable,” Beyoncé said in her acceptance speech. “Performing was enough for me.”

In 2004, Destiny’s Child released its final album, “Destiny Fulfilled.” Beyoncé solidified herself as a solo superstar with a string of albums (“B’Day,” “I Am … Sasha Fierce,” “4,” “Beyoncé), hit songs (“Single Ladies,” “If I Were a Boy,” “Halo") and a slew of awards (Grammys, AMAs, and Billboard’s Top Female Artist of the 2000s).

“I’ve always tried to pick songs and singles that were … a part of things that people are passionate about and want to talk about and debate,” Beyoncé told Billboard.

Beyoncé has also continued acting, making The Pink Panther, Dreamgirls, and Cadillac Records.

While not acting or performing, Beyoncé is an entrepreneur and philanthropist. She started a clothing line called House of Dereon with her mother and launched her own fragrance, Heat. She set up a philanthropic initiative in 2014 called #BeyGOOD to help the homeless, sick children, and the unemployed.

Beyoncé has been married to hip-hop superstar Jay-Z since 2008. The couple has one daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, born Jan. 7, 2012.
