Baseball has become a global game, and different nationalities have put their spin on it— like, say, the gyro ball. I’m all for other cultures having something to say about our national past time, which is why I picked up Baseball Haiku: American and Japanese Haiku and Senryu on Baseball. The anthology edited by Cor van den Heuvel and Nanae Tamura is a far cry from “Casey at the Bat."
Here are a few poems from the book:
the boy not chosen
steps over home plate,
picks up his books
-Edward J. Riley
like young cats
still ignorant of love
we play with a ball
-Masaoke Shiki
law office picnic
the ump consults
his BlackBerry
-David Giacalone

Comments on this entry:
hooray for the ball
so red white and blue. leather.
strike the bat: home run.
Just one hot dog, please.
Casey at bat again: plop!
There goes my hot dog!
Two strikes are enough.
Swing for the fences: air, chalk.
Outfield drops their mitts.
