There are some New York Yankees players that even Yankee-haters can’t help but like. Don Mattingly, Bernie Williams and Mariano Rivera come to mind as prime examples.
But a safe bet to head that list would be Hall of Fame shortstop and legendary Yankees announcer, Phil Rizzuto, who passed away today at 89.
You may recall that we featured a few great “Scooterisms” earlier in the baseball season that were culled from O Holy Cow: The Selected Verse of Phil Rizzuto, an entertaining and hilarious book of some of Rizzuto’s greatest hits as an announcer. (Click on “Sports” to the right of this page to read these.)
We thought the very last entry of the book would be a great way to close out our little tribute to Scooter. Here’s “Apodosis,” from page 105 (June 4, 1991, Toronto at New York, Ninth Inning):
Fly ball right field
It’s gonna drop in.
No it’s not gonna drop in.
Happy 46th wedding anniversary
Thomas and Mary Anne Clearwater.
That’s it.
The last three, six, nine, twelve Yankees
Went down in order.
So that’s it.
The game is over.
