Three cheers for associate editor Tim Mohr! Not only is Tim Playboy’s peerless editor of the Music and Forum sections, but his German is so fluent, so expert, so nuanced, that he is often commissioned to translate German writings into English.
Today Soft Skull Press is publishing Guantanamo: A Novel, by Doroethea Dieckmann, which Tim translated. The book tells the story of Rashid Bakhrani, a young German born of an Indian Muslim parent, who is caught by raiding soldiers in an anti-American demonstration in Peshawar and incarcerated in the U.S. prison camp at Guantánamo. "Written with fierce moral clarity and a remarkable economy of expression," says one critic, "Guantanamo functions as both a political statement and a fascinating examination of the prisoner/jailer relationship." Which all of us non-German speakers can now read, thanks to Tim.
