“Tell me what you don’t like about yourself,” says either Dr. Sean McNamara (Dylan Walsh) or Dr. Christian Troy (Julian McMahon) to a patient at the beginning of nearly every episode of FX’s Nip/Tuck. They should be asking the viewers, “Tell us what you don’t like about our show.” (Answer: Baby Wilbur).
We’re the first to admit that we’ve been hooked on this South Beach-set drama about two best friends and their plastic surgery practice since its premiere, even as the show creeps uncomfortably closer to going over the edge with its outrageous, salacious subplots. At the end of last season, Christian and Sean were licking their respective wounds, packing up and moving their practice to Los Angeles. Their relocation to Silicone Central might steer the show back on topic after a season featuring eclectic tangents such as an organ-harvesting ring, midget sex, Christian’s midlife homosexual panic, a lobster baby, Scientology … and Rosie O’Donnell.
We’ll have to wait until the October 30 premiere of the new season to find out what is next for our favorite playboy surgeons in La La Land. For now, you can catch up on the guiltiest of pleasures with Nip/Tuck: The Complete Fourth Season, now available on DVD and in Blu-ray (the latter being a real treat, since the show isn’t even broadcast in HD yet). Both versions include fun extras like Cutting Room Floor (unaired scenes), Sizzle: The Sexuality of Nip/Tuck, The Cutting Edge (a featurette showing how real-life dramas and medical conditions are incorporated into the show), and a Severed Parts gag reel. You know you’re a certified surgeon with your remote control, so excise the unwanted fat (the flash-forward “Conor Macnamara, 2026” episode) and more closely examine the show’s most flattering features (Christian’s on-again, off-again girlfriend Kimber, played by the irresistibly sexy Kelly Carlson). It’s the best way to play doctor.
