When compiling the Holiday Gift Guide for this year’s December issue we came across this complete set of old-style hickory clubs based on the ones Bobby Jones used in his legendary 1930 season. Attracted to the clubs for their rich woods and sculptural beauty, we coveted it as a decorative piece for, say, a wood-paneled library. We were previously unaware that there are leagues for purists who play competitively with wooden clubs, and just last week the Society for Hickory Golfers announced the first U.S. Hickory Open Championship to be held in July at the Mimosa Hills course in North Carolina, which dates from 1929. If you can get past the funny pants, and if your swing is true, you may have a chance.
