It’s criminal that New Line’s tongue-in-cheek action thriller Shoot ‘Em Up got lost in the shuffle of late summer movies, but you have to catch this one at home now that it is available on DVD and high-def Blu-ray.
Could-have-been-a-badass-Bond Clive Owen stars as a quirky loner with carrot cravings who, along with a lactating hooker (Monica Bellucci), must protect a newborn baby from a crazed criminal (Paul Giamatti) hell-bent on taking them all down. The inventive gunplay is what makes this a cut above your usual action flick, like when Owen pumps lead into a bunch of thugs breaking into his room while simultaneously pumping smoking-hot Bellucci. It all plays out like Looney Tunes on steroids, with Giamatti stealing scenes in his funniest role since Sideways. If you listen to Owen’s commentary on the disc, you’ll hear that he had as much fun making Shoot ‘Em Up as we did watching it.
