Our special New Hampshire correspondents Kevin Flynn and Rebecca Lavoie are puffing their chests with pride over their state’s special status in America’s great electoral pageant. Here’s the report:
New Hampshire voters cherish their place at the political pole position, they really, really do. So don’t get us wrong when we say…we can’t wait for this whole thing to be over.
Every city we go to, there is a parade of candidates, campaign volunteers, and newsies clogging up the streets. At the bank, folks were complaining that THE PEOPLE were here or there blocking something. The HILLARY PEOPLE were at the library. The McCAIN PEOPLE were in front of the diner. The OBAMA PEOPLE were pulling someone out of a snow bank. It’s all too much.
Right now everything in New Hampshire revolves around politics. There is no escaping it--on television, on the streets, among our neighbors. And the negative ads, no matter how politely couched, turn the formidable energy into something dirty and suffocating.
Some reporters come to our state and say that the Primary is a circus that lasts for about a week. No way! The Primary, as we here know it, lasts two years or more. People like Huckabee, Biden, Edwards, and Romney (not to mention Tancredo, Baye, Vilsack, Clark, Daschle, Santorum, Frist, Allen, and Warner) have long made the rounds at spaghetti dinners, chamber breakfasts and state fairs, trying to win the early support of activists.
We are the electoral equivalent of the OJ jury. We’ve sat through months of testimony; we’re not going to need all day to make up our minds.
Until now, we in New Hampshire have been wonderful hosts. And you know the saying about guests who overstay their welcome. We are ALL looking forward to Wednesday, when the at long last the NH Primary will come to an end.
And wait until the next one begins---Some time in the summer of 2009.
