Alexander Payne’s 1999 film Election is one of the funniest films about politics ever made, even though—or perhaps because—it takes place in a high school. At the time, his heroine Tracy Flick, played by a letter-perfect Reese Witherspoon, seemed strangely like Richard Nixon. Thanks to this little film from SlateV.com that I found on Jeff Wells’ indispensable Hollywood Elsewhere, I see that Tracy may have been less a throwback than a harbinger.
