Askmen.com drops Top 10 lists with alarming frequency – more power to ‘em, but it’s not always easy to keep up. Here’s one, though, that caught our eye: Top 10 Brazilian Playboy Centerfolds. Wow. Brazilian Playboy is certainly among the best of our international editions, and there’s probably not an editor in the office who doesn’t have a back issue or two tucked away for, you know, reference purposes, but still – wow. We wonder whether Brazilian Playboy’s own editors could have published a list as thorough as AskMen’s. Number nine posed way back in August 1982. (August ’82 anyone? Anyone? Vera Fisher.) Our usual semantic quibble aside – some of these ladies appear to have been cover pictorials; only the Playmate of the Month gets the gatefold or “centerfold” treatment – this is good work. Gold star for Ryan Murphy.

I commend AskMen on their choices. I'm not a collector of foreign editions, but like your editors, I do have some Brazilian Playboys stashed away for research, and 2 of the Playmates on AskMen's list are ones that are in my own research files. You mentioned Vera Fischer - she was the one whom I considered the sine qua non in that study, since her 2 appearances 18 years apart was IMHO a wonderful precedent that the US edition should follow with some of its own centerfolds.

Similarly, I absolutely had to have the issues with Helo Pinheiro, "The Girl from Ipanema" herself, since her appearance in the 1987 issue was followed by one in 2003 in which she appeared along with one of her daughters, another precedent that US Playboy would be wise to follow. (Incidentally, fully 21 years before the 1987 Brazilian issue, Helo had appeared in the US edition in "The Girls of Rio" pictorial - clothed, unfortunately.) As it happens, she was the subject of an article in the "Travel" section of "The Washington Post" on Sunday of this very week, since a writer traveled to Sao Paulo (where she now lives) just to meet her. (Her Playboy appearances were mentioned in passing.)

In any case, I feel that Playboy should not rely on AskMen to do the research on Brazilian Playmates and pick these top 10, but instead the US edition should examine the subject in depth, presenting the top 2 or 3 dozen in a pictorial devoted to the subject. Agreed?
