football.jpgSports fan Dave Golokhov has been examining the W-4 statements of certain assistant coaches in the NFL.

It's a topsy-turvy world when Jason Garrett, an offensive coordinator with the Dallas Cowboys, who just turned down an offer to become the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, is making more than most head coaches in the NFL - reportedly even more than the one he works for, Wade Phillips.

As Garrett applies for American Express Black Card, it should be pointed out that the Cowboys are fresh off a loss in the NFC Divisional round because of offensive failures – the same offense that Garrett manages. Although most pundits have lauded Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for the re-signing, calling this move shrewd would be inaccurate. Just look to the Cowboys NFC East rivals, the Washington Redskins, who are paying more than five million combined for their offensive and defensive coordinators. Since they made offensive guru Al Saunders and defensive genius Gregg Williams the two highest paid coordinators in the game, nobody has mistaken the Redskins for The Greatest Show on Turf or The Steel Curtain.

And in trying to one-up Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, Jones has converted his head coach into a lame duck. With more money and years tied into Garrett – not to mention that he is the younger option – duck hunting season has begun. Anything short of a Super Bowl or a perfect regular season next year and Phillips will get dropped like a pass to Terrell Owens.

Sure, Garrett is a bright mind. But he shouldn't be able to afford to make it rain. Not this much.
