The Japanese aren’t totally kicking our butts in the car market. Isuzu, which is Japan’s oldest automotive company, has thrown in the towel and decided to stop selling cars in the U.S after 28 years. It’s a pathetic retreat, since Isuzu never did well here and for the past few years has simply sold two GM models—an SUV and a pick-up—rebadged as Isuzu products. When GM decided to stop providing them in the future, Isuzu’s days in America were over.
Isuzu might not have excited car buyers, but back in the ‘80s, everyone talked about its commercial. The company’s Joe Isuzu campaign, featuring a pathologically dishonest and annoying spokesman, is considered one the best ad campaigns of the 20th century by Ad Age. Here’s a sample.
