You may remember Barbara Leigh as the original Warren Comic Book character Vampirella or from one of her roles in movies like Sam Peckinpah’s Junior Bonner or the Roger Corman cult classic The Student Nurses. The former actress/model also posed for two memorable Playboy celebrity pictorials: an Indian-themed shoot (she’s part Cherokee) in May 1973 and again in January 1977. At Playboy Studio West, where Leigh works as a production coordinator, she is family and the first woman most Playmate hopefuls encounter when they try out.
For more than two years, Leigh has been working on a labor of love: the audio book of her autobiography, The King, McQueen and the Love Machine. Said to be the first dramatized autobiography in audio-book history, Leigh’s memoir focuses on her early years in Hollywood when she juggled romances with three of the entertainment industry’s most powerful figures at the time: Elvis Presley (voiced by Paul Casey), Steve McQueen (voiced by Tim Thomerson) and then MGM president Jim Aubrey (voiced by David Hedison).
“It was Sex and the City in the ‘70s,” Leigh says. “Why shouldn’t I have all the fun of having more than one affair at a time? I definitely didn’t believe in a double standard, and I didn’t feel guilty about seeing whomever I wanted. They surely didn’t.”
The King, McQueen and the Love Machine is not simply a personalized account of some torrid high-profile affairs. Instead, silky-voiced Leigh gives us the feeling of what it was like to be a poor Southern girl-cum-rising starlet trying to survive in the male-driven Hollywood of the ‘70s. Every one of the three-CD sets, which also features Elvis’s right-hand man Joe Esposito as himself, has a signed photo of Leigh inside. “The plain truth of the matter—it was fun,” says Leigh of her three loves. So is listening to her relive it for us.

Barbara Leigh is a legendary beauty but her inner beauty really shines through in "The King, McQueen and the Love Machine." I loved the book but I'm in love this new CD, which brings her words to life.
All my best to Barbara!

I really enjoy Barbara Leigh's audio CD.
I have listen to Ms. Leigh's audio book...she is wonderful, sincere and sexy. It was very interesting listening to voices of McQueen, Elvis and Aubrey. I am a big Elvis fan, and saw him several times in Las Vegas. I seen Paul Casey (Elvis voice) show several times...just 'amazing.' I felt I was watching Elvis at the LV International Hotel again.
I loved the story of how Ms. Leigh and Elvis met.
I highly recommend Ms. Leigh's audio book. I suggest for everyone to pick up a copy.
AAA...thanks Ms. Leigh for sharing your life.
Barbara Leigh is great! This audio book has it all; sex, beautiful people, fast times and more sex. And the cool part is, it's all true. Barbara puts us right in the thick of what it was like to be a beautiful 70's starlet oogled by powerful men. Buy the CD's and get lost in the 1970's Hollywood glitz, glamour and fast times.
Having been an actress in the late 60's and early 70's, I have read Barbara Leigh's book and just purchased her audio book, The King, McQueen and the Love Machine. I found her book to be such an honest depiction of the Hollywood scene, at that time, and followed her life and career with great interest. Even more intimate and fascinating is to hear her tell her story in this excellent auto-biography. Great summer listening.
I'm honored to call Barbara a personal friend, and I'm thrilled that her wonderful book has been released as an audio project. I listened to all three CDs, one after the other, on the same day that they arrived, and although I'd previously read Barbara's book, I was, once again, captivated by her incredible story. It was a special bonus to hear Barbara's beautiful voice in addition to taking in the ups and downs of her amazing life. I must add... Barbara is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. She's a caring friend and a super nice person. See you in Memphis BLT! x
Barbara Leigh has one of the sultriest, most hypnotic voices I've ever heard. When I discovered that she was going to be reading her own manuscript for this audio CD collection, I knew instantly that I had to have it.
It's no wonder that this stunningly beautiful woman -- whose personality is even more radiant -- was able to capture the hearts of the King of Rock 'n' Roll, the King of Cool and the Smiling Cobra of MGM. She's captured so many of our hearts from the first time we saw her on the cover of Vampirella, and has never let go.
Barbara's story brings to vivid life an era experienced by many of us, but not with the rich, "love of life" attitude depicted in this tale.
First the book, then the audio...can we look forward to a movie deal sometime soon? This is definitely a tale worthy of the big screen!!
Great job, Barbara!!! All the best,
Sean
i loved every word of the book and can't wait to listen to barbara's story. what a life she leads and how lucky we all are that she shares her stories with us. thank you barbara!
I have been a friend of Barbara's for the last 5 years. She is the dearest, sweetest person you could ever know. I have one word for her new audio CD of her Elvis, Steve McQueen, James Aubrey saga of the fast and wild seventies - BRAVO!
I have been a fan of Elvis's forever and to hear Barbara's book come to life is amazing, entertaining and wonderful. I was fortunate to see Elvis in concert in Corpus Christi when he was 22 years old and in Dallas twice. Barbara's audio book is a must have and I highly recommend that you pick up a copy today! You will not be disappointed.
I was amazed throughout this entire 3 CD set while listening to Barbara's voice (which is as beautiful as she is). I've never heard anything quite like this! It was as though she was telling her story to me personally. I loved hearing the dramatizations with the other actors, which was like listening in to her conversations from those days!
If you're a fan of Barbara's (or of any of the other characters) you can't go wrong buying a copy of this!
Thank you Barbara Leigh for this very special and very heartfelt portrayal of your life. Your presence as one of America’s most extraordinary beauties has always been legend in America - but that legend often makes it difficult to appreciate the real you. Now, listening to you read your book, one can also appreciate your inner beauty, with all of your dreams, your love, your warmth and your kindness. Thank you for being so much to so many. We will always love and admire you.

I read Barbara's book and was captivated by a time in Hollywood that I really enjoy. Barbara is a class act and her recollections on her life and romances were done in a respectful and entertaining manner and I wish her the best with the new audio CD.
All The Best,

I had the pleasure of being Barbara's first press agent in 1971 when she was filming "Pretty Maids in A Row." We have been best friends ever since then. She is still the same down to earth girl now as she was then. Here's a quote of hers that was in Family Weekly, March 28, 1971. "The easiest way to feel at home for me is to be surrounded by my own books, picture albums, plants and knickknacks that have special meaning to me." She still feels that same way today. She is right on target with her copy regarding Elvis and Steve McQueen who my family had star in a number of the movies they produced. Whatever success comes from the book and the audio she rightfully deserves. She has paid her dues.
As the publisher of Elvisly Yours Newsletters I feel honoured to have received many complimentary emails from a certain "Barbara Leigh" whom I discovered was the real Barabra Leigh who dated Elvis. Barbara told me she had planned an audio book of her relationships with Elvis, Steve McQueen and Jim Aubrey (CEO of MGM). Barbara made it very clear this was no “kiss and tell” story. It was a series of love stories, the love she had for three very different, famous men at the same time in her very intriguing life.
As a friend, Barbara sent me a copy of the audio book. I did not know what to expect. It is an interesting mix of a continuous narration by Barbara telling her story with the drama of a play with actors playing different parts, except Barbara and Joe Esposito play themselves. The actors playing Elvis, McQueen and Aubrey are friends of Barbara and not meant to be sound-a-likes, they simply give a feel for their part.
I think every woman who loves Elvis or Steve McQueen will have to buy this audio book. It will also appeal to all women who buy the tabloids, Hello, OK and drool while reading gossip columns. Just imagine being the mistress of Presley, McQueen and Aubrey all at the same time, all knowing you are seeing the other famous lovers?
What many will consider an X-rated life is told in a U-rated style. Barbara’s voice is sweet, almost virginal, as if she is reading a fairy story to children. In essence, her story is a “fairy story”, except it was true. Women particularly will want to hear how she managed to cope with the challenge of three love affairs at the same time. The early 70s were a time of rapid social change with female emancipation after the introduction of the ‘pill’ in the USA and women like Barbara became more self-confident and more predatory in their relationships. Her story is told in a real “Mills and Boon” style, commented Ian Coulson, the UK Geordie Elvis.
Men who drooled over Barbara’s appearance in Playboy and her as Vampirella will want to add to their collection of Barbara Leigh memorabilia. Each CD has a fabulous photo of Barbara and early orders will receive a signed photograph.
Barbara does not set out to shock but simply tells her story with dignity, sympathy, love and care. There is a part that will shock on the third CD but I will not disclose these very personal details about Barbara and I recommend you buy the audio book to find out.
What a fabulous title “The King, McQueen and the Love Machine” and it has an equally fabulous cover with a gorgeous photo; Barbara must have never had a bad hair day. How many women could look that gorgeous with their hair soaking wet?
The audio book is reasonably priced at $25.00 for 3 CDs. Everyone who has heard Barbara's audio book has loved it. It is a unique dramatization of a unique period in her life as if Barbara is personally telling the story just to you and you are listening in on her private conversations with Elvis, McQueen, Aubrey and others. BUY IT TODAY !!!

SEX & the 70s- the 60s may have hosted the revolution; the 70s brought it home. No recent work captures the no-holds-barred, freewheeling sexcapades of the 70s like IN THE MIDST OF by C. M. Barons.
In the Midst of, retro intrigue- offbeat 1970's rewind. Cunning allusions, stand-out characters, absorbing tension- "the makings of a cult classic."
Brian connects with an offbeat mentor cum older brother named Hollis in a lopsided relationship. Edge-lurking has always been fashionable. Hollis dangles by his fingertips. Beneath his public facade lies a disturbing void. Multiple secrets protected by an ambiguity that passes for cool. His inner sanctum is Brian’s obsession; a fixation that yields a mirror with a chilling reflection. Hollis is the aim, sure as the bull's eye on any Zen-archer's target.

If you love stories of Elvis and Steve Mcqueen, this is a must read. I've read biogrpahies on both men, but the fact is, Barbara spent many intimate, candid, insightful days with the stars and she gives an honest illustration of what they were like.
And Barbara herself, with a currency of stunning raven haired beauty, was a power player herself, while remaining an honest soul.
The book is a must if you are a fan of Hollywood, Elvis, Vegas...it tells you so much you will never know.
And speaking as someone who is a friend of Barbara, she is a wonderful person with great stories to share.
Buy this book and hear about the hotel rooms with Elvis, McQueen's life through divorce and a powerful, yet emotionally unavailable studio head that loved her but would never committ.
This is a great find!
this is definitely one of the best audio books i've ever had the pleasure to listen to. from the very first moment the listener is transported back to a time when hollywood was still a place where dreams could come true and anything was possible. barbara's sultry voice and masterful recollection paints quite a picture of the times and her amazing journey. she gives the listener a glimpse into the very private lives of some of that eras most high profile men and her fond memories of each. the casting is impressive. i have to admit everytime i heard "the king's" voice, i felt his presence in the room. i highly recommend this audio book to anyone who fancies them self a fan of any of these great men or of hollywood life in the 70's. and of course fans of Ms. leigh. thank you barbara for letting us share this amazing time in your life.
Fascination with celebrities is pretty much a world-wide phenomenon and apparently no trivial detail of their everyday lives is too mundane for our fierce appetites. The celebrity world appears to many as unreal and almost fantasy- like. Most of us do not have the talent, resources, or connections to enter this magical world. So it forever remains distant and a bit of a mystery. Perhaps this, in part, explains why we assign an almost god-like reverence to celebrities. We often fail to understand that beneath the thin Hollywood veneer exists a person who shares all the same human feelings and needs as everyone else.
It is Ms. Leigh’s ability and willingness to cut through all the glitz and glamour, extravagant gifts, and inflated egos, to expose the raw human emotions that really appealed to me. Ms. Leigh has bravely given us a rare and honest look into the hearts and minds of her love interests, as well as into herself. This gives her story even greater credibility and interest. Her personal growth is another important topic in the telling of her story. Not all the decisions that she made in her early years were stellar. She lived to regret a number of them. If she knew then what she knows now, many of those early decisions would have been different. I think we can all relate to that.
Ms. Leigh’s voice is a pleasant addition to the telling of her story. It’s almost as if she is sitting a room with you sharing her experiences and insights as she might with a close and trusted friend. I believe you will love this audio presentation, whether or not you have read the book version.
Barbara and I have been close friends for many years. In that time, I have gotten glimpses of her life through conversations that girl friends share. However, I was thoroughly intrigued by her candor in sharing the ups and downs she experienced with these powerful men on this audio book. This honesty could serve any young lady well entering the Hollywood scene in her experiences there. Thanks, Barbara for paving that path. And thanks for the entertainment, I loved it.
