Intern Lindsay Silberman got out of the office for the morning:
Props go out to Playboy’s own Jamie Malanowski who was the keynote speaker today at the Writers’ Conference and Intensives 2008 at Marymount Manhattan College in NYC. Along with Amanda, my fellow Playboy intern, I had the opportunity to see him in action.
Jamie gave a thought-provoking yet humorous speech about being the managing editor at Playboy, explaining that his job requires him to do a wide variety of things everyday. Jamie deals with production, staff management and development, top edits everything that goes into the magazine and online, commissions and writes stories, and when taking a break from serious journalism, well… “I remember when I was one of five editors who got to weigh in on which photo of a model best showcased her butt!” he told the crowd. “If you’re at Martha Stewart, you have to look at a lot of pillowcases and pies, and at Playboy, you have to do this kind of stuff along with your other duties.”
His main duty, of course, involves working with the text of literary masters. While he was at the crowd’s service in answering questions, he only asked them to do one thing: continue reading good writing and talk about it with their peers. Jamie feels that modern-day readers have every right to be “snobs” in choosing what they read, and should commit to demanding the best, be it magazines, newspapers or books. “If we are the last ones to read the printed page, let’s go down reading it together.”
