There are many reasons that it pays to work at Playboy, and the impressive debut EP by Stars Align is probably the perfect example. Stars Align has had a long, interesting genesis that began when two Playboy coworkers – Henry Flury and Rob Hilburger – met and discovered that they were both hopeless guitar nerds. The two musicians became friends, put together a band and played their first show at LA’s legendary Troubadour. Various Playboy colleagues were invited, including Tiffany Fallon, who had just been named Playmate of the Year (yes, Playmates come to our parties -- sometimes). She dragged her then-boyfriend – Joe Don Rooney of Rascal Flatts – to the club, where he got in touch with his inner rocker, took Stars Align under his wing and began producing the band. In fact, many of songs on the EP were recorded in Nashville at Rooney’s home studio. Rooney kept an eye on things and Fallon made sure that everyone ate on schedule and didn’t drink too much, with mixed success. The result is a memorable mix of piano-driven pop rock with catchy choruses and enough energy to fill a stadium…or at least the Fallon-Rooney house.
As Stars Align played various clubs and started recording, much has happened. Joe Don and Tiffany got married and had a baby boy. Hilburger was promoted to director of PR for the west coast, where he works daily with Hugh Hefner and The Girls Next Door. (Flury moved on to another job – yes, that happens. Don’t ask us why.) But the band continues to play regularly (sometimes with Joe Don sitting in) and you can check out the CD on the Stars Align website or their MySpace page.
