If you’ve lived in New York for any amount of time, you soon feel as if you’ve seen all the tricks the city has to offer. Thus it is an extra sweet pleasure when something unexpected—and free—comes around. Such is New York’s newly updated and upgraded public radio station, 91.5 FM, WNYE Radio New York. An initiative of the Bloomberg administration, WNYE is a local public station that, partnered with Seattle’s KEXP, features slick, commercial-style DJs slinging all indie “hits” from six in the morning until noon. On the air since March, Radio New York is the only reliable rush hour solution on the dial to the public radio drone-fest and morning zoo nightmare.
