Martin Aviles wanted to let us that know he is the proud new owner of a pink 1972 Mustang, which he describes as a “Playboy Edition.” He asks, “Do you know anything about this car?” Well, it is pink, but maybe not “Playboy” pink. According to Muscle Car Color History: Mustang 64 ½ to 68, “In 1967 Ford offered, through at least one promotional effort (and perhaps more), a Mustang color called Playboy Pink (Ditzler #71617). It is often mistakenly believed that a Playboy Pink 1967 Mustang is either a long-lost prize awarded to that year’s Playmate of the Year or a replica of that year’s prize. The award that year, however, was a pink Plymouth. While Ford engines powered the prizes in 1965 and 1972, the only Mustangs provided as Official Cars of the PMOY were the 1964 ½ convertible given to Donna Michelle and the 1969 Shelby GT-500 given to Connie Kreski.”
The history here is a bit murky, since apparently anybody could order Ditzler’s pink paint and call their car a “Playboy Edition.” As one Mustang owner posted during a discussion of Playboy Pink at Vintage-Mustang.com: “I don't think I've ever come across a website yet that was 100 percent correct on the pink cars. There were several different shades of pink available and it’s a common misconception that if it’s pink it’s automatically called Playboy Pink, no matter what shade it is or what year it is. I have six different shades of pink in my Special Order Paint Selector. The Mustang Color Archive shows for 1967 both Dusk Rose and Playboy Pink. Now, I've seen a few pink 67's lined up together at Carlise a few years ago. One was an 'S' paint code the others were two different MX special-order paint codes. What you have for "Playboy" is what one of the MX cars looked like. Kind of a Hot Pink. But the original Playboy cars were pretty much the Dusk Rose color.”Another participant then posted a scan of a Ditzer color book page, dated September 1968: “This page from a PPG book shows 1967 Ford Special Mustang colors, Code S - Dusk Rose (Ditzler code 50470) and Playboy Pink (Ditzler code 71617). On the same page is the 1969 color Pink (Ditzler code 71617), which is the same code as the 1967 Playboy Pink.”
We’d love to hear from any Mustang aficionados who have more information.

Comments on this entry:
I have just purchase and 1967 mustang convertible out of British Columbia, Canada. The paint code is 71617 which is on the drivers door plate. I am being told that this is the Playboy Pink paint code number. The car is in Very good condition including the interior. The car has been repainted on the outside, but not the ends of the doors, or under the hood or trunk, only the outside. The color shade match is perfect between the new paint and the old paint. I have been told that there were 100 of these made in 1967 with the "Playboy Pink" color. Any info you could give me on this color would be fantastic.
Thanks
