weeds3.jpgJust in time for the season premiere on Showtime on June 16, Lionsgate has released the green-friendly Weeds: Season Three on DVD and Blu-ray. How green? For starters—and for the uninitiated—the show focuses on Californian suburban mom Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker) who starts dealing marijuana to make ends meet for her family after her husband’s sudden death. In addition, the DVD packaging is made from 100% recycled paper and plastic water bottles. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

This season finds Nancy in way over her head as she dodges the DEA, grapples with thugs and tries to distance her two sons from her pot dealings. The funniest moments come when white-as-snow Nancy clashes with gangbangers who always seem to be after her for money. One named U-Turn (Page Kennedy) does a drive-by shooting while riding passenger in her Prius and then decides to buy a fleet of the hybrid cars for his posse (“They’re real quiet…you can sneak up on people and shit”). Guest stars this season include Matthew Modine (who chews into his role as an over-sexed community planner) and Mary-Kate Olsen as a kooky-yet-seductive virgin who is equal parts herb and Jesus enthusiast.

The discs are loaded with extras, including commentaries, trivia tracks and a soundtrack sampler. The BD even contains an interactive game called “Kush Kush and Away” that loaded a black screen when played on our Pioneer BDP-HD1, which clearly needs a firmware upgrade. Ah, new technology. Of course, if you smoke enough of the bud Nancy is peddling, you might see shades of God’s truth in that blank screen. Either way, the episodes look flawless in high definition and are hilarious no matter what your state of mind.

Excellent DVD - another great season! I watched the entire season in 3 days. New editions Matthew Modine and Mary-Kate Olsen were phenomenal, yet still nothing grabs your attention as much as Mary-Louise Parker's smile.
