Bat Mania is in full throttle. For those having trouble getting tickets to The Dark Knight, you might want to stay home and check out Batman: Gotham Knight—an all new PG-13 animated film from Warner Bros. Home Video, now available on DVD and Blu-ray.
Batman: Gotham Knight is a collection of interlocking animated short films that explore the Batman mythos. Some act as bridge stories between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, while others dig deeper into Bruce Wayne’s past. All six shorts are created by various award-winning talents including acclaimed directors, writers and stylish animators. Batman enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that the title role is voiced by fan-favorite Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, The New Adventures of Batman and Robin), who set the standard as this generation’s definitive and easily recognizable Batman voice.
Special features include four classic episodes of the Emmy Award winning Batman: The Animated Series. A Mirror for the Bat: The Evil Denizens of Gotham City is a stimulating documentary that covers the endless list of villains in the Bat Universe, while Batman and Me, a Devotion of Destiny: The Bob Kane Story offers a comprehensive look at the life of Batman creator Bob Kane. One highlight of the Bob Kane documentary is where Bob himself talks about the Playboy Mansion screenings of the old Batman serials, and credits our own Hugh Hefner as the sole instigator in convincing ABC to turn Batman into a TV series.
It his highly recommended that fans pick up the two-disc special edition to get your hands on all of these features. This is one of the most vivid and groundbreaking Batman animated films in recent memory, and the darker, more mature tone compliments the big screen’s The Dark Knight nicely.
