Researcher Ron Motta thinks British TV is better than American. Well, he at least thinks this series is:
Despite having a limited run on cable in the U.S., the British comedy Spaced has attracted rabid fans on this side of the pond, including Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen. If you check out the DVD, which becomes available Tuesday, you might agree. The smart and brilliantly funny show stars creator-writers Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead) and Jessica Hynes (nee Stevenson)(Son of Rambow) as two sporadically employed twentysomethings posing as a professional couple in order to rent a flat. Described by Pegg as “a cross between The Simpsons, The X-Files and Northern Exposure,” Spaced is fast-paced and often dips into the surreal through its use of fantasy sequences.
The DVD features, amongst other features, all fourteen episodes, plus commentary not only from the cast and director Edgar Wright, but also from Hollywood heavyweights such as Smith, Tarantino, Matt Stone and Diablo Cody.
To celebrate the release, Pegg, Hynes and Wright, are kicking off a four-city tour. The tour starts at the Village East Cinema in New York City on Monday, July 21st with a screening and Q&A with Pegg, Hynes and Wright. Moderated by film critic Elvis Mitchell, the creators will screen three episodes of the series and then participate in a Q&A. Seating is on a first come first serve basis, so get there early.
