SE INSIDER
Marty Spence debuted in March/April's College Girls, but with
simultaneous appearances in Natural Beauties and Lingerie,
which are about to hit newsstands, we thought it was time to get to know a
little more about this Wichita State marketing major. Here's what she had
to say about her past, present and future.
PSE: What's your
story? MS: I considered myself a typical kid -- with a few
exceptions. Even though I liked to play on the playground and have fun I
found a passion in reading and writing at a very young age -- so young, in
fact, that at one point my teachers were trying to provide me with more of
a challenge by having me write book reports while the other children had
story time. I was also a young entrepreneur, always making something and
trying to sell it -- everything from homemade key chains to dream
catchers.
PSE: You were the only child of a single mother. How do you
think that impacted you as a person? MS: I'm extremely blessed
to have had such a wonderful mother who was able to be both a mom and a
dad to me. She is my best friend and raised me to be proud of who I am and
where I came from. She has always been forthright and honest when I had
questions and gave me the freedom to choose my own path. I sincerely
believe that without her strength and hard work I wouldn't be who I am
today. We are a team and I am just as proud of her as she is of me.
PSE: You claim you were a nerdy kid -- just how nerdy were
you? MS: Nerdy is an understatement! Growing up I was a mess --
in sixth grade I had a short, boy haircut and a spiral perm. To make
matters worse I was disproportionate and had to wear braces and a plastic
mouthpiece that caused me to slur my words. It was because of my security
as a person and the memory of being made fun of that I tried not to really
become part of one group or another. I had friends from different crowds
even though I was associated more with the popular crowd because of my
involvement in school -- head cheerleader, student council, prom princess.
Because I remember what it was like to be the victim of cruel jokes I
always try to treat everyone with respect, even when it isn't returned. It
hurts to be made fun of, laughed at and left out.
PSE: You also describe yourself as eccentric. Give us some
examples. MS: Two words -- black sheep. Abiding by social norms
makes me nervous. It's easy to conform and accept conceived notions as
rules to live by, but you only live once and I intend to look back and
have no regrets. I love to be a little different -- whether it's taking my
grandmother's vintage clothes and altering them on the sewing machine or
wearing a broach in my hair -- I like to do things just a little
differently. It's fun to make your own rules.
PSE: Why did you decide to pose for us? MS: When I
came across my first playboy I was in my teens and still coping through my
nerdy stage. The women were beautiful and confident and strong. It was
then that I knew I wanted to be part of the Playboy family. Throughout the
years I lost contact with a lot of my friends from high school, but upon
hearing of my posing for Playboy many of them have since contacted me and
expressed their support of their "hometown girl!"
PSE: Describe you experience at the Kansas City Casting
Call. MS: I asked my mother and my grandparents if I should try
out and after I got their overwhelming support, I signed up. I had no idea
what to expect. I was nervous and excited to finally meet the individuals
that could help shape my future and give me the opportunity I had dreamed
of when I first flipped open the pages of a playboy. The Playboy crew was
full of energy, and I had a great time in both the photo/video shoot with
the guys as well as with Mikki. It was an amazing experience that I would
highly recommend to any aspiring Playboy model.
PSE: What do you do for fun? MS: I love spending time
with friends, family and my puppy Chloe. I enjoy trying new things
including foods and wines. When I'm not working or studying, which is a
rare occasion, I take pleasure in a good nap. I relieve stress through
dancing -- the feel of the music and the powerful movements allow me to
sweat out the stress and renew my energy. Though I love the permanent ink
on the arch of my left foot that reads "dance like no one is watching..."
I can't honestly say that enduring that pain was a smart decision! I claim
to want to skydive, but much like my last crazy, not-so-painless tattoo
idea, jumping out of a plane may be a thought I may need to reconsider.
PSE: What can we expect to see you doing in 10
years? MS: In 10 years I anticipate owning my own business. I am
currently working on the business plan and hope to have my ideas proposed
in the next two years. I would also hope to be happily married and have
begun a family -- both extremely important goals to me.
