Playboy.com editors went to Nashville's Superspeedway to test their nerve on curves. But then they spotted the ones on driving instructor Sammie Lee Bradley. A former Miss Nude World, Sammie Lee's job is to take customers for 130-mph rides around the 1.3-mile oval track, but few passengers manage to keep their eyes on the road. Neither could we, so we quickly booked her for a spin in Girls of Summer. We recently sat down with her to discuss her need for speed and drive to succeed.
Playboy Special Editions: Give us a little background.
Sammie Lee Bradley: I grew up in the heart of Tennessee. My sister, cousins, friends and I would ride horses all day long in the summers or swim in the ponds. Sometimes we tried to ride the cows -- but we were smart enough not to try that with the bulls! It was a real countrystyle childhood -- kind of like Mayberry -- and I'm grateful for it. I still own a 100-acre farm, where I raise Quarter horses and Tennessee walkers -- not for show, just pleasure.
PSE: What were you like in school?
SLB: I was a music geek in high school -- marching band, concert band and any other music projects I could get into. I couldn't sing, but I could play just about any woodwind instrument -- flute, piccolo, clarinet, etc. -- and a little guitar. I also took dance -- modern, jazz, clogging and hip hop. I was very energetic and happy, with a wild imagination.
PSE: Have you put your musical gifts to good use?
SLB: I've been doing country music videos since I was 18. I've played everything from a new mom having a baby to a hot babe in a singing group. I appeared in videos for Alan Jackson, Mark Wills, Cledus T. Judd, Brooks and Dunn and Six Wire. I was also featured in Country Music Television's Video babes: Secrets Revealed. They had an online contest to vote for the hottest video babe, and guess who won? Me! It made for great bragging rights!
PSE: So how did you end up becoming Miss Nude World?
SLB: First I got into what's called "headlining" or "featuring" through a friend of mine. I used to go with her to conventions and award shows where she performed as a showgirl. Not only was my friend paid a salary, she got to make great money selling 8x10s, T-shirts and posters after the shows. Since I had studied dance, I thought, hmmm, maybe I could do this, too! So I talked to her agency and they put me through their mini-camp. It taught girls how to put together choreography, music and costumes. Once they felt you were ready, they booked you for shows, and like any other job you had to work your way up the ladder. The Miss Nude World contest is considered the most prestigious of these events, and you have to be invited to participate. Even though I had only been performing for a couple of years, they obviously thought I was ready. But, of course, in addition to your dancing and costumes, you have to be in really great shape, because every flaw is seen by everyone! I got the invite in 1997 -- and won! And when you win, you instantly get a huge jump in your salary and a lot of recognition. But the best part for me was feeling like I had really accomplished something. This contest has a lot of history behind it.
PSE: It's quite a leap from Miss Nude World to the race track. How did that come about?
SLB: I was working at a promotion at the Nashville Superspeedway and met the people from Monster Racing, who asked if I wanted take a ride in one of the cars. Of course I did -- and I was hooked instantly! They asked me to come back, and pretty soon they let me warm up the cars in the mornings by driving them slowly around the track. But in my heart I really wanted to drive fast like the instructors! Eventually the owner of Monster Racing, Sonny Kruhm, gave me my chance. He started me out taking laps at speed behind an experienced instructor. They were amazed at how quickly I caught on.
PSE: Where'd you develop your love of speed?
SLB: I probably picked it up from my dad. He always had a fast car he was working on -- but, of course, I wasn't allowed to drive it back then. So I think my curiosity and frustration turned into a rebellious thing -- and I have the speeding tickets to prove it!
PSE: What's it like to race around the track?
SLB: The top speed with our program at the Nashville Superspeedway is around 130 mph. When you're at these speeds on the track you can't describe it -- you just have to feel it for yourself! The acceleration and the the g-forces in the corners are unbelievable.
PSE: What are your duties there?
SLB: My official job is to give rides to customers in my two-seat NASCAR Nextel Cup car, like the ones featured in the playboy.com photo shoot (http://www.playboy.com/features/features/monsterracing/) and in Girls of Summer.
PSE: Who comes for a spin?
SLB: Anybody who wants to scratch that speed itch. Our bread and butter clients are from corporations -- food show groups or national auto part store chains -- but anyone who wants to experience the thrill of driving at speed is welcome. About 20 percent of our customers are women. They're generally better listeners and tend to be more cautious, but they enjoy it just as much as the guys!
PSE: Are customers surprised to find you behind the wheel?
SLB: I'm definitely not your stereotypical racecar driver, so when the guys get in the passenger seat of my car they usually are pleasantly surprised. Sometimes they just kind of stutter and say "Oh, you're a girl!" After the ride, though, it's a different story. They say things like, "Wow, you're really good," or "You're awesome!" Women get such a bad rap for being bad drivers -- especially blondes!
PSE: Then would you mind explaining your nickname?
SLB: I was given the nickname Crash by my family and friends when I was younger because I was constantly crashing into things. But never while driving!
PSE: You do a lot of traditionally guy stuff. Do you worry about your feminine image?
SLB: I love driving race cars and I love life on my farm, but I'm just as comfortable at a formal black-tie event as I am getting greasy at the track or shoveling horse manure at the barn. I definitely have a girly-girl side -- I love to go shopping for makeup and sexy clothes, getting facials and having my nails and toes manicured -- but I also love hanging at the track with the guys. I'm doing everything I enjoy, and I don't care what anyone thinks about it -- I'm just being me.
PSE: So who's your role model -- Dale Earnhardt?
SLB: No, it's actually Dolly Parton! Even though she came from humble beginnings, she still made it in the music business. But the thing I admire most about her is her personality -- she just tells it like it is. She doesn't try to hide behind anyone or anything -- she just is who she is, doing what she loves. That's how I want to live my life.
