Jarmo Pohjaniemi's published Playboy photos have drawn wide praise and attracted a legion of admirers, but a recent assignment also won him a degree of fame usually reserved for rock stars and matinee idols. After shooting Playboy Slovenia's Playmate of the Year, he was invited to attend the official PMOY party in that newly independent state, formerly a part of the Yugoslav Republic, where he became a darling of the local press. We sat down for a chat with our Miami-based contributing lensman to see how he fared.

The Slovenia photo crew gives Jarmo a few pointers.

PSE: And then Playboy Slovenia invited you to attend the events surrounding the publication of the PMOY issue. Tell us about that.
JP: The PMOY party at Playboy Slovenia differs quite a bit from the U.S. version. It's a lot less formal and a lot more of a "lets party" type of a event. There's a ton of press and absolutely no rules -- anything goes and it feels more like a rock festival than an orchestrated event. Playboy has a big celebrity status there, so it's one of the biggest happenings in town, and becoming a Playmate is considered a huge success. Nina's celebrity has reached astronomical heights -- she has become a real star.

PSE: We hear you got your share of press, too.
JP: Yes, I did. As soon my plane landed the press slammed me like I was some big-deal celebrity. It's a huge story there that an actual Playboy photographer from the U.S. came to their country to shoot their shining star, so I became a very hot topic. I appeared in 20 or 30 different newspapers and magazines -- including four or five covers -- and was chosen Man of the Week and Best Dressed Man by a gossip magazine that determines such things. I also appeared on four or five different TV shows explaining how a Playboy shoot is done and talking about the Playboy philosophy. It was a crazy, wild experience -- and I loved every minute of it!

PSE: We hear you went back for more.
JP: Yes, this last trip lasted 11 days and came with even more scrutiny from the press. I couldn't go anywhere without being asked another million questions. But in addition to Slovenia, I also traveled to Hungary and Venice. We crammed all of our equipment, models and crew into a bus-sized van and spent lots of time driving from one side of the country to the other in search of some of the most beautiful locations the world has to offer. It's really hard work, but I would do it again in a heartbeat. I see Greece on the horizon in a couple of months -- and perhaps a few other nice locations, too!

PSE: You actually started out as a model yourself, right?
JP: Yes. I began modeling in my native Finland, then branched out all across Europe. My very first trip to the U.S. was with my girlfriend in 1981, but the next time I came as a model with Zoli modeling agency, where I made my first hookup with Playboy. But in 1999, after many years studying the photographic techniques of some of the best lensmen in the business, I called Exec Ed Jeff Cohen and told him I could shoot models as well or better than anyone on his staff. He told me to prove it, so I sent in photos on spec and two weeks later he called asking me how much money would I like for the film. The rest, as they say....

PSE: Switching, um, gears -- we hear you're on another fast track -- motorcycle racing. How did that get started?
JP: I knew my parents wouldn't allow me to have a motorbike, but I bought my first -- a Honda 125cc -- with summer job money when I was 17 years old and kept it at my friend's house. My parents never found out -- it's still a secret! After modeling around Europe I earned enough money to buy a new, heavier Honda bike. It was actually too heavy for any race specs, but as stubborn as I was I persuaded a racing school instructor to let me be part of the school anyway. I was the butt of jokes by other students, but I always took the best lap times with my heavy motorcycle. I got the last laugh!

PSE: And you won enough to get some sponsorship.
JP: Yes, European Honda offered to sponsor me. Well, it wasn't more than a pair of tires per race, but I felt like I had made myself the deal of a lifetime -- this was the fast lane I always wanted to ride in! Eventually I was signed to a deal by Honda Germany and received a real race bike -- a Honda RC 30 -- with tires included! This opportunity led to many years on the race circuits all around Europe. Hospitals started getting familiar with Jarmo, too -- racing comes with bonus invitations to many ERs.

PSE: And some winners' platforms, too.
JP: Over the years I landed on eight European podiums. In 1990 I figured it was time to get a bike in the US and see if the asphalt is as hard as it is in Europe -- and quickly found out that it is! I started to race in Florida and gradually started luring sponsors. Not long ago I got another bike from Honda, which only whetted my taste for speed. I took many podiums -- and many wipeouts, which is part of the deal -- and recently I raced to second place in Florida. Once you really get into the riding all you can say is, When do we do it again?
