MISSY MESSMER
Although she had dreamed of joining the sorority of Playboy women for years, it wasn't until Missy was 27 that she got up the nerve to try. The Playboy Cyber Club wasted no time initiating her as a December '01 Cyber Girl of the Week, and she made her SE debut in Voluptuous Vixens '02. This year she appeared in Sexy Girls -- proving, at age 30, that you can fool Mother Nature -- and pops up again in this month's Lingerie. We sat for a chat to find out more about her and her plans for the future.
PSE: A little background, please.
MM: I was born in Hawaii and moved to the mainland when I was three. As a kid I was very creative -- always singing, writing stories, pretending I was a movie star -- and I was a very good student. When I got to high school it all fell apart --I discovered boys. Wow, did I discover them!
PSE: Your dad was a cop. How did he deal with your social life?
MM: He was on a SWAT team and in undercover drug enforcement. He's a big brawny type of guy -- his nickname was The Hulk -- and man, all of my boyfriends were terrified of him! He's retired now, but for a while he looked pretty scummy because he had to play the part of a druggie. All his undercover cop friends would come over and hang out -- like the Hells Angels, but fake. At the time I was so embarrassed that my friends were thinking, Wow, what's up with her dad -- he looks pretty narly!
PSE: You're a kickboxing instructor. How did that happen?
MM: I grew up in Anaheim surrounded by a lot of gangbangers, which was enough of an inspiration. But that's really not the reason I got into it. It was because of a lady who lived on our street who was an aerobics queen. I really looked up to her -- she was so dedicated and fit -- and she was like 50 years old! Hey, that's old when you're only 16. Anyway, I decided that's what I wanted to do, so first I took an aerobics course and began teaching. Then about six years ago I got my kickboxing certification, and I've been teaching that ever since. If you ever have a bad day it's a great way to get your frustrations out. I have to admit I've used it a couple of times in the past -- but not on people, just on objects like cars and doors.
PSE: Why did you decide to do the Cyber Girl shoot?
MM: To prove to myself that I could do it! It was scary -- meaning I was afraid I would be rejected. To be able to be a part of Playboy is such a dream -- all the girls are so beautiful. Luckily, there was a Playmate at the shoot and she made me feel so confident and comfortable. Afterwards we went shopping in LA., and as we were walking across the street Jay Leno stopped us. He was filming something, and they used us in his little segment! It was such a fun day -- I'll never forget it. Being nude for Playboy is worth it -- they make you feel and look so beautiful.
PSE: You appeared in the Cyber Club as Tabitha Taylor, but you chose to appear as Missy Messmer for us. Why?
MM: Tabitha or Missy -- its all so confusing. Missy Messmer is my legal name, Tabitha is the made-up name I gave myself as a little girl. Remember the show Bewitched? Well, since I didn't have a middle name, I told my mom that's what I wanted it to be because I wanted to be like the little girl on that show with magical powers. I added Taylor because it sounded better than Messmer. I was a little worried about my dad's reaction, so I originally went with Tabitha for Playboy. He's still never seen my layout -- and I'm too chicken to show him! I know he would be very proud, but he's a little old fashioned, and I'm his baby.
PSE: Any showbiz gigs lately?
MM: I just did a celebrity fashion show that Nicole Richie hosted. When I arrived they asked me to walk the red carpet. I was so excited, but just as I drove up, so did Victoria Gotti -- John Gotti's daughter and star of the reality show about her family. I didn't recognize her because her back was turned, so as I walked on the carpet I just couldn't understand why no one was paying attention to me! Finally, this girl walks up to me and says, "Honey, the reason they don't care is because that's Victoria Gotti." I thought, damn, I need my own TV show!
PSE: What about films?
MM: Oh yeah, I want to be a movie star. I love to pretend I'm someone different -- my imagination runs wild. The first gig I ever got was the lead role in the Shakira video, Objection Tango. I got to smoke and be a bitch -- the total opposite of me. I also appeared in Dude, Where's My Car?, playing a dancer. Recently I finished a little cameo part in a movie that will go to the Cannes Film Festival. I play a bimbo -- hard to believe, isn't it? It should be out by Christmas. I'm also doing a DVD for the Man Show, which will also be out in December. I can't tell you exactly what I'll be doing, but it involves lots of jumping!
PSE: Are you concerned that you're being typecast?
MM: Not at all! I like being a sex symbol. I'm not trying to be the next Meryl Streep -- I love being sexy and fun and bubbly, and there's always room for one more sexy girl. So Hollywood -- watch out!
